The Chaffee County Jail and Courthouse, Side by Side
In Salida, the jail and the court share a block. Here’s how to reach both.
In bigger counties, the jail and the courthouse can sit across town from each other. Chaffee County keeps them next door to each other on Crestone Avenue. Online listings often mix up the jail with the sheriff’s administrative office, so here’s the information that actually gets you where you need to go.

When Your Life Takes a Wrong Turn
Came for the Weekend, Stuck for the Weekend
If that’s you, here’s what to know:
- You don’t have to drive up first. Most of the bond paperwork can be handled by phone and e-signature.
- The case stays in Salida. Court dates happen at the Chaffee Combined Court, so your loved one will need to come back for them.
- Travel may be restricted. Some release conditions limit leaving the state. We’ll go over them before anyone heads home.
- Vacation plans don’t move court dates. If a date conflicts with work or travel, call us early. Waiting until after the date has passed is the expensive mistake.
Know Before You Call the Jail
What the Chaffee County Jail Will (and Won’t) Do for You
- Staff can’t recommend a bondsman. That’s jail policy, so don’t expect a referral when you call. You’ll have to choose one yourself, and we hope it’s us.
- They won’t pass along messages. Staff confirm custody and bond status only. Emergencies are verified first before an inmate is told anything.
- Visits are video only. On-site video visits are free, and visits from home cost a fee. Both are scheduled through Securus.
- Release has a clock on it. The sheriff’s office states that a defendant must be released within six hours after a cash bond is posted or a PR bond is set, barring extraordinary circumstances.
- You can ask for the paperwork. Whoever posts a money bond can request a copy of the bond paperwork, including the next court date. It’s worth asking for.
